3 Things Your DUI Attorney Would Want You To Do When You Get Pulled Over

Driving under the influence can be a big problem. If you have been pulled over because you are suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or mind-altering drugs, you can end up getting a ride to the police station. You can contact an attorney who can help you with your case when you are there. Before you get to that point, you must think about what your lawyer might want you to do.

Be Polite

If you are under the influence, it may be easy for you to get a little louder and more excited than you might usually be. That means that you might get a little antagonistic toward the police officer. Even if it makes you feel good at the moment to do it, that's never a good thing to do. Being antagonistic to the police officer can upset them, and they may be less willing to help you than they might have otherwise been. Of course, being polite doesn't mean you have to agree with the officer or do everything they tell you; it just means that you must be polite and civil when you tell them no. It's always easier for you to go from a polite state to a more confrontational state than it is to go the other way around.

Refuse Field Sobriety Tests

No matter what anyone may tell you, you don't have to do the field sobriety tests. They have minimal basis in science and are very subjective. They are hard to pass even if you are stone-cold sober. The police officer can ask you to take them, but you can tell them no. It's the same thing when it comes to taking a breathalyzer test. You can refuse to take either test, but you should be aware that the police may take you to their station or the hospital for blood tests if you do refuse.

Stay Quiet

If you do make it to the station, you need to stay quiet. Just ask for your attorney, and don't say anything else. The officers may try to get you to talk about random things and then use that to get you to answer questions, but if you stay quiet or keep saying you want your lawyer, you can't say anything that can hurt you.
